During times where hygiene and safety are a top priority, there is a simple yet beautiful solution to protect food from dirt, bacteria and other inconveniences: the dome also called cloche. Covering your food with a cloche is a must have.

Domes or cloches have been used in pastry shops or in some bars when food must be presented to the customer all day – such as pastry and cheese – and should therefore be protected while seen. Cloches can be in all kind of materials, but one seems to stand out. We will explain why and give you some tips on how to use cloches in the best way!

The origins of the Cloche

A Cloche – which also means doorbell in French – is a dome-shaped covering for a dish that is removed before serving. It is not only a theatrical object, existing to conceal and reveal food but it’s also a great tool that has originally been used to avoid bugs from eating the food. Cloches are an excellent tool for both outdoor and indoor dining.

The first cloche was probably created to cover cheese in the old days in France. Either to keep the cheese at ambient temperature or to protect it from other foods when placed in the refrigerator – mainly to avoid smells.

The cloche took a fancier turn when used to reveal food in a high-end restaurant. Spectacular dishes had to stay warm and intact before been revealed to the customer.

Depending on the use of the cloche, different materials are utilized.

What are food cloches made of?

The “cheese cloche” mentioned earlier is usually made of mesh. This material lets the cheese or fruit breathe and protects it from bugs. Easy to pick up and placed back again, these cloches are very light-weighted and ridiculously cheap. However, they do not protect the food from smaller particles such as dirt or bacteria.

Silver cloches are meant for a WOW effect when revealing the food. Made of stainless steel or on the higher end, silver plated, cloches with a silver finish can be very pretty and dramatic. However, they are really meant to hide the food and they do not allow anyone to see what is below it.

Glass is probably a good compromise: both protective and transparent, they are a perfect combination between option one and two. Only issue: glass breaks.

Another material less know is Polycarbonate. This very high-end thermoplastic is very impressive because it can have the same look and even same touch than glass. Lighter than glass, it also does not break. Polycarbonate cloches are a great alternative to glass!
